How Grandmother Mona's Ghost Found a Spot, After Routing Reds
SVIR, Belarus -- From early childhood, my father, Yiddish poet Menke Katz (1906-1991), told me all about his grandmother Mona (i bobeh Moyne).
We would sit and talk, in Yiddish, at the corner table of Bernie's candy store on New Utrecht Avenue in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn. The non-Orthodox (and Italian) presence in the neighborhood was still strong, though the chasidic invasion was underway. We, in any case, had our own private Yiddish world.
