My grandmother studied Yiddish at the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in the late 1890s, to help the immigrants pouring into New York City -- or so she claimed -- and indeed her Yiddish seemed to be restricted to jokes and the 50 Yiddish words everybody knows. And that was all the Yiddish I ever encountered. An uncle studied Yiddish in 1945, in order to work with the Joint Distribution Committee in the displaced persons' camps after the war, and his father had been a rabbi.
