Next to Jerusalem, Israel's most picturesque and colorful city, is Akko or Acre, which lies just across the bay from Haifa, its southern neighbor. Akko actually consists of two cities - Old Akko, a small, walled city of 5,000 Arab inhabitants, and a new, post-1948 city of about 40,000 Jewish residents. It is the old Arab city with its restoration now in the hands of the Old Akko Development Co., which is becoming a must-see stop on any visit to Israel.
