Having seen his famously revered spiritual compass appear this week at President Ezer Weizman's residence, one senior Shas activist was quoted as regretting Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's having "gone to Canossa."
If that anonymous Shasnik had had better - or any - secular schooling, he might have known that the analogy doesn't quite work, since at that North Italian mountaintop it was the clerics who brought the state down its knees, and not the other way around.
