In an apparent attempt to bypass the law that ensures the right of non-Orthodox members to sit on religious councils, Religious Affairs Minister Eli Suissa yesterday suspended the Jerusalem Religious Council and named its head as caretaker.

It is believed to be the first time ever that a religious council has been suspended.
