NEW YORK - One night in 1948, dancing bodies filled a Manhattan stage and leaped into the avant-garde. It was the birth of the New York City Ballet.
Lightning-fast feet. Arms cutting clean through the air, like propelled feathers. A woman, suspended high above a man, seemingly weightless.
These heart-stopping illusions were George Balanchine's choreography for his company's opening triple bill: "Concerto Barocco," "Orpheus" and "Symphony in C."
