Former Communist Party chief Linh, architect of Vietnam reforms, dies

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) _ Nguyen Van Linh, who revitalized Vietnam's economy with free market reforms as Communist Party general-secretary, died today. He was 82.

The government announced his death on state radio and television, saying flags would fly at half-staff for two days. A funeral was planned for Wednesday.

No cause of death was given, though a government statement said Linh had suffered from a long, serious illness. Linh had been living in Ho Chi Minh City since retiring in 1991.
