Reform Revising `Who is A Jew' Policy After Years of Confusion

NEW YORK -- Fifteen years after abandoning the 2,000-year-old Jewish law that the mother's faith determines whether a child is Jewish, the Reform movement is changing the name of its "patrilineal descent" policy to the more egalitarian-sounding "equilineal descent" or simply "Jewish descent."

The movement is also moving to develop a series of recommendations to guide congregations and rabbis in implementing the 1983 decision, which has met with condemnation from Orthodox and Conservative leaders and confusion ...
