YAOUNDE, Aug. 13 (IPS) -- Cameroon's authorities are under
pressure from human rights advocates to jettison a civil code
dating back to the time when Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France and
left behind when the last French administrators pulled out of West
and Central Africa in 1960.
While the 1804 Napoleonic code has been extensively modified
elsewhere, it has remained practically intact in Cameroon, where
it continues to affect various aspects of family life.
