Qld: Mermaid discovery is no myth

BRISBANE, Jan 7 AAP - Marine archaeologists this week located the wreck of His Majesty's
Colonial Schooner Mermaid off Cairns, filling a significant gap in the nation's maritime
history.

The Mermaid, which had circumnavigated the continent and contributed vital knowledge
of waters left unmapped by earlier explorers such as James Cook and Matthew Flinders,
ran aground and broke up on June 13, 1829.

Her remains lay hidden in Barrier Reef waters until archaeologist from the Australian
