IN another effort to prevent further piracy of Thai biogenetic
resources by international agricultural and pharmaceutical industries,
lawyers and conservation groups Tuesday urged the government to introduce
a new legal measure called the material transfer agreement (MTA) for genetic
protection.

Dr Chakkrit Kuanpoch of Sukhothai Thammathirat University's Law
Faculty, said that under the MTA any company or researcher who wished to
obtain genetic resources under the protection of Thai state agencies had
