THE East Timor issue can serve as a catalyst for run-down Asean to
rejuvenate its role in the regional and international scheme of things.
With the new leadership line-up in Jakarta and in the military forces,
discussions on the future of the former Portuguese colony have already
proceeded and at a quicker pace than ever.

For Asean to assume any role would depend very much on Indonesia's
willingness and the East Timorese and their leaders' perception of how
