Wednesday, March 19, 2008 -- While the Fast of Esther is a day of solemnity, it isn't for me - it happens to coincide with my son Asher's brit mila - only the second to be held in the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue on Manhattan's Lower East Side in the last half- century.

In fact, the 13th of the month of Adar, the date on which the Fast of Esther falls, boasts a distinguished history as a day both jubilant and mournful.
