Cleveland Milestones

1873

John Patterson Green was the first Black Clevelander to hold political office, elected as justice of the peace. In 1891, he became the first African American in the North to be elected to the state senate.

1915

Thomas Fleming became the first African American to win election to Cleveland City Council.

1935

The Future Outlook League, founded by John O. Holly, became the first local Black organization to succcessfully utilize the boycott.
