NT: Alice Springs becomes "dry town" tomorrow

DARWIN, July 31 AAP - The desert town of Alice Springs officially becomes a "dry zone"

tomorrow, when drinking is banned from all public places to curb crime and violence.

The move follows a request from locals, who told the Northern Territory Licensing Commission
grog consumption was jeopardising public safety.

People who break the rule face fines of up to $500.

The move comes on the back of federal government plans to ban alcohol in remote Aboriginal
