Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin on Friday helped launch a six-year, euro164 million (US$206 million) project aimed at saving the Gothic abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, perched on a rocky outcropping off the coast of Normandy.

Set in a bay, the island monument _ among France's most-visited tourist sites _ is being choked by rising silt that threatens to turn the tidal system into a salt marsh and fuse the island to the mainland.
