ASIA: Australian disaster team heading for Yogyakarta: Downer
MELBOURNE, May 30 AAP - The first of a team of Australian disaster and medical experts
will arrive in Indonesia today to begin work in earthquake-ravaged Yogyakarta.
The 6.3 magnitude quake on Saturday was centred off the Indian Ocean coast near Yogyakarta,
the former Javanese royal capital. The official death toll is 5,137, with 2,155 injured.
But the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said there were 20,000 injured and
more than 130,000 homeless, of which 40 per cent were children.
