This Shabbat we will be reading a special maftir (concluding segment of the
Torah reading) for the Shabbat preceding Purim. Because this haftarah
begins with the word zachor, "remember," this Shabbat is known as Shabbat
Zachor. In the maftir we read:
"Remember what Amalek did to you on your journey, after you left Egypt --
how, undeterred by fear of G-d, he surprised you on the march, when you
