Marie-France Stirbois, leading figure in France's far-right National Front, dies at 61

Marie-France Stirbois, a leading figure in the French far-right National Front party and a former member of the European Parliament, has died of cancer. She was 61.

The National Front headquarters erected a flag for her Monday, despite a recent conflict with party leader Jean-Marie Le Pen. She died Sunday night, according to a long-time colleague, provincial mayor Jacques Bompard.

Stirbois served in the lower house of France's parliament, the National Assembly, from 1989-1993, and in the European Parliament in 1994-1999 and in 2003-2004.
