Reports: Voters overwhelmingly approve merger of two Russian regions

Voters in two Siberian provinces overwhelmingly approved a merger that is part of an effort by the Russian leadership to consolidate control over the vast nation, Russian media reported Monday.

Nearly 90 percent of voters in the Irkutsk region and about 98 percent in the much smaller Ust-Ordyn Buryat autonomous district supported reunification of the two administrative areas in a referendum Sunday, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported, citing election officials in Irkutsk, 4,200 kilometers (2,600 miles) east of Moscow.
