Youths taking part in an Easter bonfire competition have uprooted two centuries-old trees in western Cyprus, authorities said on Tuesday.

"If you see it you'll be reduced to tears," local Green party spokesman Andreas Evlavis told The Associated Press. "We're talking about criminals."

The two terebinth trees, up to 60 feet high, were thought to have survived from the 14th and 16th centuries near the village of Lempa by the seaside city of Paphos, 90 miles west of Nicosia.
