JOHN JOHNSTON PARKER, a large man of unusually genial manner, was the
grandson of a Confederate soldier who fell at Chancellorsville and the son
of a small-town merchant who fought a losing battle against poverty like so
many others in the post-Civil War South. Taught industry and thrift and
reared as a churchgoing member of the Episcopal Church, to which he
retained lifelong devotion, young John Parker was in the American grain of
