Black Law Clerks at the Supreme Court
In October 1998, Kweisi Mfume and 18 other demonstrators were arrested on
the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court building. The protesters were demanding
that the nine sitting justices hire more minority law clerks.
At that time, less than 2 percent of the 394 law clerks hired by the
current Supreme Court justices during their tenure on the Court were black.
Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Justice Antonin Scalia, Justice Anthony
Kennedy, and Justice David Souter had never had a black law clerk.
