Former South African President F.W. De Klerk turns 70

South Africa's last white president, F.W. De Klerk, turned 70 on Saturday, hailed by fellow Nobel laureates for his role in ending apartheid and ushering in multiracial democracy.

At a birthday party Friday evening, Nelson Mandela praised De Klerk's courage in releasing him from prison in 1990, legalizing the African National Congress and showing good faith in negotiations toward the first free elections in 1994.
