Mardi Gras is said to have been established by the Catholic Church, who
designed the Gregorian calendar with a fixed date for Christmas, as well as
fluctuating dates to accommodate various other religious holidays. As a
result, you'll find that Mardi Gras (meaning "Fat Tuesday" and marking the
final day of the Mardi Gras season) can fall anywhere from the first week
in February to the first week in March. The entire celebration, which lasts
about two weeks, is referred to as Carnival, and Fat Tuesday is always the
