As the New Year be gins the African American community is faced with
challenges on all fronts. African Americans continue to lag behind most
other ethnic and racial groups in access to the American dream. Blacks face
limited access to healthcare, higher rates of several chronic diseases,
more joblessness, lower rates of home ownership and rising homicide and
incarceration rates. The Sun Reporter asked African American community
leaders what steps the community can take in 2006 to overcome barriers to
progress. Their answers follow:
