As is known to jurists and citizens throughout the Western world, William
Hubbs Rehnquist, the sixteenth Chief Justice of the United States, died
this past September after a losing battle with thyroid cancer. He was 80
years old.
In published obituaries, Rehnquist's political opponents lauded the late
Chief Justice for his steady hand in guiding the Supreme Court. But most
American blacks stood silent. In respect for his office, black leaders and
commentators bit their tongues and withheld providing details of
