It's no secret that the nation is moving to the political right. And to
some extent this also includes the academic world. In recent years,
scholars have been coming out of the closet and in some cases taking the
extreme position that black studies is the bastard child of the now
despised black power movement of the late 1960s.

Thirty years ago questioning the value of black studies would have been
grounds for sitting in an isolation booth in faculty dining rooms.
