In Harbin, in far northeastern China, the city's water supply was restored today according to the official Xinhua news agency five days after a shutdown due to contamination by benzene and nitrobenzene in the Songhua River. About 100 tons of the chemicals had spilled into the river following an explosion at a petrol chemical plant more than 200 miles upstream from Harbin.
