This should be the last sedra of the Torah. Simchat Torah would arrive this
week -- before Rosh Ha-Shanah -- and next Shabbat, we would begin again
with the Torah's very first reading, Bereshit. So say the commentators, who
note that in Vayelech, Moses announces his death. At age 120, he says, he
is so infirm that he can no longer "come and go."

God commissions Joshua, Moses gives what looks like a final peroration and,
