Fed: Howard says popularly elected president would be disaster

CANBERRA, Nov 11 AAP - Voting for a popularly elected president would be a disastrous
formula for an Australian republic, Prime Minister John Howard says.

He said pitting a popularly elected president against a prime minister was a recipe for trouble.

Mr Howard touched on the issue of a republic while talking about the Whitlam dismissal
30 years ago.

He said there was no need to change Australia's constitution even though the governor-general
still had the power to sack a government.
