The American and Israeli flags make for a ubiquitous pairing inside Reform
Congregation Keneseth Israel, adorning the Elkins Park synagogue's
sanctuary bimah, chapel, library and classrooms like a couple that had
seemingly been together forever.

But just two years ago, Israeli flags were in short supply within the
building -- an omission that seemed less representative of 2003 than of the
1940s, when American Jews were bitterly divided over whether or not the
