When Angela Merkel announced Monday that Thomas de Maiziere would be her chief of staff in the chancellery, it opened another chapter for these two politicians. Both aged 51 and both with Protestant backgrounds in a predominantly Catholic party, their careers first became inextricably tied to each other 15 years ago when Germany was going through tumultuous changes.
