To eavesdrop on a culture, listen to its proverbs. One of the oldest
literary genres, proverbs are compressed moral and practical instructions,
philosophical sound bites, passed across the chain of generations.
"Short sentences drawn from long experience," wrote Miguel de Cervantes,
who gave Sancho Panza, Don Quixote's sidekick, a head full of proverbs that
would spill into his conversation, often tangled together, lending his own
version of wisdom.
