Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who served on the Supreme Court for 33 years, 18 of them as chief justice, died yesterday of thyroid cancer. His death is likely to spur a fierce confirmation battle over a successor. NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg reports.
