Washington's venerable Corcoran Gallery exhibit celebrates `American genius'

Founders of the Corcoran Gallery of Art wrote in its charter 146 years ago that it should be "used solely for the purpose of encouraging American genius."
The latest show gives the public a chance to judge whether Washington's oldest art museum is meeting its mandate.
Titled "Encouraging American Genius," the exhibit opens Saturday and includes 92 paintings covering more than two centuries of American art.
