If you or someone you know is a Kowalski, Baran, Nowak, Zajac,
Wojciechowski, Krawczyk or Mazur, those are not just so many letters put
together and used as a legal surname. Each of them means something. For
instance Nowak originated to describe a newcomer to the village, and
Kowalski was the blacksmith's son. The original Mazur hailed from the
forested, lake-studded north Poland region of Mazury (Masuria), and Baran
(ram) was probably a peasant who stood out for his stubbornness.
