A relaxed-looking Pope Benedict XVI began his stay in the Vatican's summer palace in the hills southeast of Rome after flying back from a vacation in the Alps near the Italian border with France.

Benedict kissed a baby held up to him as he arrived at the Vatican estate in Castel Gandolfo and then appeared from the palace's balcony facing the town square to say hello to cheering townspeople.
