June is Black Music Month. During the next three weeks, the "AFRO" will
travel down memory lane to pay homage to pioneering events in Black music.

Black music comes directly from the shores of Africa. The melodic rhythms,
syncopated beats and the shouts accompanied by dance are the staples of
yesterday, today and tomorrow's Black music. The "call and response" (the
interaction between vocal leader and congregation) that takes place in
every Baptist church and at hip-hop concerts is a practice that originated
on the coast of West Africa.
