Pope Benedict XVI, on his 100th full day as pontiff, was expected to leave his vacation retreat in the Italian Alps on Thursday and head to the papal residence on a lake south of Rome.

The 78-year-old pontiff has been vacationing in Les Combes, near Mont Blanc on Italy's northwest border with France, since July 11, staying in the same chalet used for a decade by his predecessor, John Paul II.
