At the stroke of midnight on May 23, 1962, the West Indies Federation,
whose legal birthplace was England, died.

It was formally dissolved by proclamation by the United Kingdom Parliament,
giving effect to the order-in-council passed on Mar. 23 earlier that same
year.

As West Indian schoolchildren of years past would recall from their books
and the telling of the hurried battlefield burial of Sir John Moore, "Not a
drum was heard, not a funeral note".
