Although she was only able to obtain a grammar school education because of
the limited opportunities available to Blacks and women in the early 1900s,
Lucy Barnes made sure that her descendants had better.
"She passed on independence, hard work, and (taught us) that if you believe
in yourself you could make it no matter what," said grandson Walter Smith.
Barnes was born June 14, 1896, in Westmoreland County, Va., the daughter of
former slaves Benjamin and Moriah Hills.
