When she arrived in Michigan in 1975, Ashoka Rao tried to acquaint people
with Kathak, a classical dance form she had trained in.
"The questions I was asked were like - so do you do Mujra (a dance
performed by courtesans to entertain)?" said Rao, who learnt dance from
Pandit Birju Maharaj's disciple Pandit Arjun Misra.
"When that popped up, I did not want to even declare I knew Kathak," she
said. She began by teaching Bharata Natyam, and did not start her Kathak
program till 1989.
Kathak, like other classical dances, originated in the temples of India,
