Betty J. Gilbert first Black woman ordained in district
Immanuel Presbyterian church, a congregation recognized by its motto "We
enter to worship... We depart to serve," is now under the guidance of a
compatible leader who is driven by a desire to inspire people to "fall in
love with the word of God."
On Sunday Rev. Betty J. Gilbert, an educator who accepted her call to
preach later in life, was officially ordained and installed as Immanuel's
pastor.
The church, located at 3620 E. 38th St., was packed with members, visitors
