The familiarity of the pageantry, rituals and traditions of Catholicism are
soothing balms to the faithful in this, their time of loss. Even as they
mourn the death of long-time Pope John Paul II, a rigid procedure has
already begun to name his successor, a procedure that does much to assure
believers that the next head of the church is truly chosen and led by God.

"So many of this stuff is scripted," said the Rev. Joseph Rossi, a
professor of theology at Loyola College, of the papal selection process.
