THE ivory-billed woodpecker, considered extinct for more than six decades, lives on. Last week's announcement that the magnificent creature has been rediscovered in Eastern Arkansas is heartening news in the ceaseless conflict between human progress and nature.

While the two forces seem to coexist most of the time, a combination of habitat destruction, pollution and other forms of encroachment stack the odds against many wildlife species - unless humans help out or back off.
