Michael Walzer is UPS Foundation professor of social studies at the
Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. He is the author or editor
of more than a dozen books and is co-editor of Dissent magazine. The above

Clausewitz's famous line, that war is the continuation of politics by other
