Fed: Increased skilled migration not the answer: CFMEU

CANBERRA, April 15 AAP - The federal government's plan to lift the skilled migration
intake by 20,000 is a short-term fix that won't solve Australia's skill shortages, a major
union said today.

Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone announced yesterday that Australia would take
an extra 20,000 skilled migrants in 2005-06 to help meet labour force needs.

Senator Vanstone said between 130,000 and 140,000 non-humanitarian migrants would be
taken, with a skilled migrant component of 97,500.
