Papers in many West African countries have accused the army-appointed
leader of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, of harming the cause of democracy in
Africa.

Some say Mr Faure's assumption of power is a challenge to other African
countries to scrutinize their own regimes.

In a Beninese daily, however, a commentator wonders if Benin can take
economic advantage of neighboring Togo's political crisis.

Issuing "useless" communiques and condemnations by toothless African
organizations such as the African Union and the Ecowas group (of West
