Easily the most significant of elections since the country gained its
independence 13 years ago, was the battle between two presidential
candidates to take the reins of power and lead the nation of some 48
million people either toward Europe or closer to Moscow.
An initial round of voting on October 31 weeded an initial field of 26
candidates down to two, who fought each other in a bitter run-off election
on November 21 and a rerun of that election on December 26. Opposition
